Dental crowns earned their name because they cover the visible portion of the tooth, or the “crown,” to holding the remaining tooth structure together. At Seaman Family Dentistry, we offer porcelain dental crowns in Lenexa, Kansas, so that our patients can enjoy durable, aesthetic smiles. If you prefer a gold crown, though, we can accommodate your request.

You may need a dental crown if:

  • A large old filling needs to be replaced
  • Most of a tooth is decayed and less than 50% of healthy tooth remains after removal
  • A tooth has a large chip or is broken
  • A tooth is cracked
  • A tooth has had a root canal performed
  • You want to change the shape and/or color of a tooth
  • You want to make a crooked tooth appear straight
  • You have received a dental implant post

Receiving a dental crown requires two visits to Seaman Family Dentistry. At your first visit, the dentist will remove any decay and old filling material, and then the tooth will be shaped for the crown. An impression of the tooth is taken (which is sent to the lab to build your crown), and a temporary crown will be made and placed. Then, in a couple weeks, you will return to have the temporary removed and your new crown will be fitted and cemented permanently.

Dental crowns can last you a very long time, as long as you keep up with your routine dental visits and practice good homecare. At our office, we provide you a 5-year guarantee on the crowns we do for you, provided you continue to receive regular preventive care (examinations and professional cleanings).  After all, your natural tooth is under the crown, so you do need to keep the plaque and bacteria off of your teeth so it is not allowed to work its way below your gum line and start decaying your tooth under the crown.
